Description

WEYMOUTH

SY6778NE ST MARY STREET
873-1/23/311 (West side)
14/06/74 No.60

GV II

Small house in row, with shop. Some C17 fabric, C18 front,
modified in C19. Painted Flemish bond brickwork front, some
rubble in rear walls, asbestos-cement slate roof.
2 storeys and attic, 2 windows; an early roof-light above 2
sashes, one has a glazing-bar upper sash with inserted louvres
in the abbreviated lower sash, the other is a 4-pane, both of
these in flush boxes. A C20 shop front and door cut into and
below the adjoining property, No.59 (qv), slightly, with a
supporting cast-iron column within, and to the right is an
arched opening to the throughway. At the rear, over the
throughway, is a rubble wall with remains of a casement with
splayed stone surround. A small parallel range to gables, and
a swept-down roof to a brick extension.
INTERIOR not inspected.
A remnant from one of the earliest Melcombe Regis houses, with
low ceiling heights, and a very modest front, including an
opening to a throughway, right. Despite changes to the main
elevation, this retains interest in the street because of its
early provenance.
(RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 351).
