Uploader's Comments

William Aislabie was Chancellor the Exchequer at the time of the South Sea Bubble. He was expelled from Parliament and retired to his estate at Studley Royal and atoned by beginning the great ornamental water gardens adjoining Fountains Abbey, though it was his son, also William, who incorporated the ruins of the Abbey.
