Boundary Marker in centre of Birdforth Bridge
(Formerly listed as Milepost in centre of Birdforth Bridge)
II
Boundary marker. Mid C19. Cast-iron. Of triangular section, hollow-backed with sloping top plate. Side plates each have a pointing hand and vertically-set raised lettering reading, on left 'BIRDFORTH', and on right 'BULMER WEST'.
Historical note: these names refer to the Wapentakes (otherwise known as Hundreds) into which counties were historically divided; the parish of Birdforth formed part of the Birdforth wapentake, and the parish of Thormanby part of the Bulmer wapentake.
