Part of a planned community built after Middleton was demolished in the 1770s by Lord Milton, Earl of Dorchester and owner of Milton Abbey. He decided that the old market town was upsetting his rural idle and commissioned architect Sir William Chambers and landscape gardener Capability Brown to design a new village in the wooded valley of Luccombe Bottom to the southeast of the Abbey.
