Large country house. C16/C17; extension and alteration by Delmar Blow. Early
C20. Limestone near ashlar, stone slate roof; coped gables main front and
rear. Originally a 3-gabled single depth house, now extended by a deep central
rear wing and wing at right end, the latter skilfully designed in local style by
Blow. Two storeys, attic and part cellar; road front has 3 main gables and a
smaller fourth gablet off-centre left above entrance, complex fenestration,
stone mullioned casements except one 16-pane sash, ground floor, left, above a
2-light hollow chamfer casement to cellar; 4-panel door with overlight, then 3 x
3-light recessed hollow chamfer and 3 x 2-light C20 recessed ovolo-mould; all
ground floor windows under continuous string, stepped over door. At first floor
are 3 x 2-light recessed ovolo-mould under common stopped hood mould, similar
2-light over door, a 2-light and 3-light recessed hollow-mould under common
slopped hood, and 3 x 2-light C20 as for ground floor, under common hood mould.
Each gable has 2 x 2-light; recessed chamfer to left, recessed hollow chamfer
centre and right each paired to hood moulds, and a small oculus in porch gable.
Small blind lights in peak of first two gables. Right return similar treatment
by Blow, with central door; left return single gable has small basement light in
plinth, two 12-pane sashes in architraves under continuous moulded string,
3-light ovolo mould casement with stopped hood, 3-light hollow chamfer similar,
and oculus in gable peak. At back a variety of openings, and triple and six-
fold diagonal ashlar stacks to gables, with small stack to central gable. Large
deep projecting central wing, left of this a C20 glazed door. Interior stud and
plank door within porch, painted fielded C18 panelling in left room, Ionic
pilasters flanking stone fire surround; two principal beams, dentilled
cornices. Good C17 panelling in entrance hall; stone floor to central room,
here also large bressummer fine and moulded panelling. The original main stair
replaced by Delmar Blow, but remains of older stair in semicircular well to
first and second floors. Roof not generally seen, but much renewed where
visible. An interesting palimpsest of a house, with careful modification by
Detmar Blow who lived very close to this parish.
