4/61 Bridge keeper's house to north
west of Hardwicke Bridge

Bridge keeper's house. c1830 with later Cl9 addition; by Robert
Mylne, engineer to the Gloucester and Berkeley Ship Canal. Stucco;
painted brickwork; Welsh slate roof; plain tile to addition. Greek
revival; single-storey; cruciform in plan with portico facing
canal; L-plan single-storey addition to rear. Gable ends to
original house with low-pitched pediment over continuous
entablature. Fluted Greek Doric order columns on circular bases to
front portico: distyle in antis, with engaged flanking walls each
with small square window; central plain doorway. South west end:
single cambered-headed sash. North east: altered C20 casement.
Rear pediment partially obscured by addition with various scattered
fenestration. Ridge-mounted chimney on axis with front portico.
Interior not inspected. An example of one of the 2 standard
designs for bridge keeper's houses on the canal (c.f. that at
Sellars Bridge, q.v.), attributed to Mylne but executed after his
death. All doors and windows boarded over (January 1985). (D.
