House. 1921, on site of and incorporating some masonry from an earlier house.
By Robert Mauchlen for Sir Angus Watson. Ashlar with chamfered plinth; Lakeland
slate roof.
U-plan. Centre with projecting cross-gabled wings. 2 storeys, 6 windows.
Centre section: 2 semicircular steps to central panelled door in bolection-
moulded surround with shaped stone hood on brackets; lintel inscribed A 19 W
21 .
Above the door a round-headed niche with pilasters, moulded archivolt and
keystone, the base inscribed EN ATTENDANT UNE MEILLEURE. Flanking 5-light
windows on ground floor. with flat mullions, in shallow moulded surrounds; leaded
casements. Four similar 3-light windows on let floor, with floating cornices.
Wings: similar 6-light windows on each floor. Niches above. Hipped roof
with gabled wings. Two tall corniced stacks rise from angle of centre and
wings. Lean-to sun lounge on left return has corniced end piers with later
glazed infill.
Rear: irregular and picturesque with similar windows. Apsidal stair projection.
Hipped dormer.
Attached to right the former coach house and coachman's flat, now a cottage in
similar style. Steeply-pitched roof with slate-hung gable.
