SP 9433-9533 WOBURN MARKET PLACE (East side) 8/129 22.10.52 Nos. 11 (The Gifford Gallery) and 12 (Woburn Fine Arts), (formerly listed as Nos. 4 and 5 High Street) GV II* Formerly a single house, later divided into 2 and ground floor converted to 2 shops. Early C18, shops late C18. Red brick, the walling dark with many vitrified bricks, the dressings a lighter red. Shallow pitched slate roof with deep eaves. 3 storeys. First and 2nd floors divided into 2 bays by moulded brick giant order pilasters. 3:3 windows to both of these floors, one first floor and 3-2nd floor ones blind. Segmental-headed sashes with glazing bars, in wide moulded wood cases almost flush with wall. All are under gauged brick heads with painted fluted keystones, and have moulded sills with brick aprons below. Ground floor, No.ll: projecting rectangular shop- front has central glazed double doors flanked by large windows with glazing bars. The three bays are articulated by 4 slender engaged columns which rise to form shepherds crook brackets supporting the moulded projecting cornice. Each section has segmental headed glazed panel to top part, those above windows with ornamental glazing bars of interlocking rings. ornamental mouldings to spandrels and frieze above. Ground floor, No.12: projecting rectangular shop front has central double doors, each of 6 panels, surmounted by rectangular fanlight with ornamental glazing bars. The flanking windows have glazing bars. 4 slender moulded pilasters articulate the 3 sections. Entablature has segmental headed panel spanning whole width of shop front, with moulded decoration of overlapping discs, and moulded design to spandrels. Simply moulded projecting cornice. Between the 2 shop fronts, but slightly off-centre, is house doorway. This has double doors, each leaf of 2 flush panels and glazed top panel, surmounted by panel with segmental-headed moulding. Red brick ridge stacks to both gable ends.
