Farmhouse, probably Cl7, possibly incorporating part of mid-C16 building with recent
and extensive alterations. Rubble stone base with plastered cob upper walls. New
timber lintels to openings. Steeply pitched cement-washed slate roof with brick
chimneys at gabled ends. Plan altered to 3-cell with wide hallway and slight
projection with staircase to rear. Single depth. 2 storeys, long asymmetrical, 4-
window front. All windows new. Ground floor with large 2-light and 3-light
casements with glazing bars flanking double partly glazed C20 door. 2-light French
window to right. First floor four 2-light casements with glazing bars. 1½-storey
extension, circa mid-C19 on left-hand gable end. Rubble stone with hipped slate
roof. Projecting stone stack with brick,chimney on right-hand gable end. 4-light
granite mullioned window to rear with cavetto moulded central mullions and hollow
chamfers to flanking mullions. Late C19 geometric curved staircase with square
balusters and moulded rail. Site granted to monks of Abbey of Beaulieu in 1142.
Sold on dissolution of monasteries. Detailed records remain in Beaulieu Estate
library, Hampshire.
