Description

SW 72 NW CONSTANTINE

8/40 Pair of gate-piers and stiles at
- High Gate, Merthen

II

Pair of gate-piers at drive entrance to Merthen qv and adjoining stiles and seats.
Probably C17, the left (east) post replaced in C20. Tall granite monoliths about 2
metres high. The lower sections are rectangular on plan and the upper sections are
octagonal with pyramid stops and have chamfered tops. The new left hand post is not
quite a facsimile of the original right hand post which is roughly hewn on the outer
side of the lower section, suggesting that originally it would have been set against
the hedge (bank) before the granite grid stiles were built either side of the posts.
The bank at either side has a dressed granite retaining wall incorporating a stone
seat facing the stile. The right hand (west) post has a bench mark on its base.
There was once an avenue from this gateway leading south to Merthen (Henderson).
