Tudor Block House

A Grade II* Listed Building in Maker-with-Rame, Cornwall

Tudor Block House, Mount Edgcumbe

Uploader's Comments

This Grade II*-listed stone blockhouse, which is now in Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, was built for King Henry VIII to defend the mouth of the Tamar and the town of West Stonehouse opposite. Devonport wasn't developed until many years later, but the Tamar provided a safe natural anchorage for English warships. The Tudor blockhouse is between Devil's Point at Stonehouse on the Devonport side and Wilderness Point, here on the Cornish side. Dating from 1540 - and with three gun ports - it would have once been right on the side of the River Tamar, but the subsequent building of a later gun battery in front of it on the side of the river makes its present positioning seem rather strange.
