Former Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank, c.1870. Sandstone, slate roof with one chimney stack on the ridge, one at the right side, another at rear. Roughly square plan on sloping corner site. Two and a half storeys with basement, in Scottish baronial style. Front to Market Street formed by 2 unequal gabled bays and corner turret which incorporates entrance; ground floor has pointed arched windows, coupled in the 1st bay and triple in the 2nd, each with a projecting frieze the 2nd of which is larger and supported on the heads of carved beasts clasping shields; 1st floor windows similarly disposed are sashed without glazing bars; gable of 1st bay contains carved coat of arms, gable of 2nd bay has stepped 3-light sashed window and is lettered above and below this "THE" "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE". Corner turret, square at ground floor with arched doorway which has hoodmould, continues at 1st floor in cylindrical form with 2 lancets, deep parapet, and swept out conical lead-clad roof. Right return wall (to Union Street) has a monopitched roofed cloister with 5 lancets linking with 3 ½-storey gabled bay to rear, which has a studded door with pointed arched fanlight enclosed by a hoodmould terminating with carved shields; basement window of 4 lancets, otherwise all windows this side are coupled sashes without glazing bars. Deck to doorway protected by spear-headed iron railings.
