GV II


House, late C19, in Victorian Gothick style. Yellow brick with stone dressings,
slate roof. Complex plan consisting essentially of main range aligned approx.
N-S with crosswing to S, semi-octagonal 2-storey bay on S elevation, semi-
circular 2-storey bow on N elevation. Glazed door in,porch with foliate
capitals. In front of crosswing, tripartite double-hung sash window of 2-2-2
lights with columns and foliate capitals in square bay. To right of door, 3
double-hung sash windows of 2 lights under glazed canopy. First floor, bay of
crosswing becomes canted, with double-hung sash windows of 2-2-2 lights, and
cast iron railings on its roof. 4 double-hung sash windows of 2 lights with
stone segmental arches. Stone copings on gables. According to Stott Hainault
House dates from 1870; it was built for a soap manufacturer named Knight, and
was acquired by Chigwell School in 1917 (88,128).
