II

Group of 3 cottages, C17 and C19, now one house. Timber framed, plastered with
zigzag combed designs in panels, roof thatched. 2-bay cottage aligned NE-SW
with chimney stack at SW end, mid-C17. Extension to SE with central chimney
stack to form 2 additional cottages, early C19. C20 extension at SW end of
original cottage. C17 cottage of one storey with attics, C19 cottages of 2
storeys. NE elevation, plain door and 3 casement windows on ground floor, 3
more above, all C20. Half hipped at SE, hipped at NW. Framing partly exposed
internally. In original cottage, jowled posts, straight rising braces from
corner posts to wallplates and tiebeams, interrupted studs. Original doorway of
framed and pegged construction through central tiebeam. Unchamfered joists of
vertical section arranged axially. Inserted square dormer in N.W. side of SW
bay, C20, replacing an earlier, smaller dormer. In later cottages, lighter
framing, primary straight bracing, posts unjowled.
