Former farmhouse. Circa mid/late C17, possibly a remodelling of an earlier house,
1980s renovations, circa late C19 outbuilding. House stone rubble, the rear wings
rendered cob on stone footings; bitumen-painted slate roof; end stacks to main range,
end stack to north east wing. Outbuilding stone rubble and framed construction with
brick infill and a slate roof, gabled at ends.
Plan: U plan house: the main range facing south, 2 rooms wide with a through
passage; rear wings at right angles: a parlour to the north-east, a dairy wing to the
north-west with a courtyard between, enclosed by a north wall. It is not clear which
of the 2 main range rooms (if either) was the C17 kitchen: possibly the left hand
(west) room which has some evidence of a smoking chamber. The north-east room has 2
bread ovens but these may be C18 or C19 additions. A small outshut at the rear of
the main range forms a corridor between the wings. A straight stair rises from the
through passage adjacent to the right hand (east) room. A stone rubble garden wall
adjoins the house at the south west with an outbuilding, built into the slope of the
land with loft access on the east side.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay south (garden) front with a central C19 or
early C20 front door, the top panels glazed, and a C19 gabled open timber porch.
Small pane C19 3-light timber casements. The north wall of the rear courtyard has a
red tiled pentice, the courtyard has a pitched stone yard. The outbuilding to the
south west (function unknown) is of an unusual construction. On the west side stone
rubble piers support a slate floor to the loft, the slates support the structure
above which is timber frame with brick infill, doorway into the loft in the east
side.
Interior: The house, although recently renovated, retains interior features of
interest. The left hand room of the main range has an ovolo-moulded scroll-stopped
crossbeam with exposed joists, an open fireplace with a chamfered stopped lintel and
the remains of what may be a smoking chamber; cream oven on front (south) wall. The
right hand room has a re-used crossbeam with exposed joists, the fireplace has been
blocked but retains parts of an ovolo-moulded scroll-stopped lintel. The through
passage retains a C17 chamfered doorframe to the rear door. The north-east room has
a massive chamfered crossbeam, exposed joists, an ovolo-moulded scroll-stopped lintel
to the open fireplace and 2 bread ovens. The north-west dairy has closely-spaced
crossbeams. On the first floor two 2-panel C18 doors survive.
Roof: Apex not inspected but the north-east wing main trusses have halved collars
fixed with wooden pegs. The outbuilding is roofed with pegged tie beam trusses.
