15/116 Hiller Cottage and Sedgewell
- Cottage
GV II
2 cottages. Sedgewell Cottage. Circa mid C17 with a late C20 rear addition, Hiller
Cottage probably C18 or earlier, it may be one build with Hiller Cottage.
Whitewashed rendered cob and stone ; corrugated iron roof over thatch, gabled at left
end, hipped at right end ; left end stack, axial stack.
Plan: Not entirely clear at time of survey as only the interior of Sedgewell Cottage
was inspected: this is a single depth 2 room plan arrangement with a lobby entrance
facing back-to-back fireplaces in the axial stack. Surprisingly long right-hand
room, smaller left-hand room, slightly broken forward with a stair rising against the
front wall. Hiller Cottage appears to be one room on plan, the left end stack has
the remains of a bread oven and it is possible that the range was originally one
house.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front (Hiller Cottage to the left).
Large C20 glazed porch to left of centre to Sedgewell Cottage, central front door to
Hiller Cottage. C20 2-light casement windows.
Interior: Sedgewell Cottage has 2 chamfered crossbeams to the right-hand room with
scroll nick stops and exposed joists : similar crossbeams to the smaller left-hand
room which has some chamfered stopped joists.
Roof: Apex not inspected, principal rafters appear to be straight but may be fixed to
wall posts. Sedgewell Cottage was depicted in a painted by H. Swanick (1866-1929).
Group value with Well Cottage.
