ST 81 SE IWERNE STEPLETON

4/158 Stables approximately 30m
14-7-55 west of Stepleton House.

G.V. II

Stables, mid C18. Probably by Thomas Fownes. Brick, central bay in header
bond and outer bays in Flemish bond. Hipped roof, part tiled and part stone
slated. Symmetrical. Single-storey with lofts, 7 bays. 3:1:3. Rusticated
ashlar end pilasters. Moulded cornice. Round headed sash windows under brick
arches with stone keystones and impost blocks. Central double, fielded panel
door with fanlight over. Rusticated ashlar surround. Dentilled pediment
within which is an ashlar lunette window with keystone over. Central bay
surmounted by a wooden clock turret and bell-cote with ogival cupola. Right
of centre is an inserted dormer attic window. Not fully inspected internally
but appears to contain some early fittings. (RCHM, Dorset, vol. III.)
