Large former mill owner's house, now detached house. Late C16; additions of c1690, c1750 and late C18. Random rubble and ashlar limestone; roughcast render; rendered ashlar and brick chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic; large c1690 addition forms L-plan; 2-storey wing and stair hall on east side. West front: original 3-gabled house runs forward to left, 1 gable obscured by c1690 addition. Recessed cavetto and chamfered mullioned casement fenestration, all with hoodmoulds; two 3-light and single-light to ground floor with off-centre doorway having Tudor arch, hoodmould and plank door; three 3-light upper floor and two 2-light attic casements in gables. Three gables to c1690 main range: symmetrical 5-window fenestration to ground and upper floors, all cross windows with fine bolection moulded architraves except central upper floor early 12-pane sash with thick glazing bars and decorated keystone; central ground floor cross window in former door position. Projecting cornice above each row of fenestration. Two-light casements with hoodmould and keyed oval above in attic gables. South side: gable end of main range to left with paired 12-pane sashes having thick glazing bars and beaded architraves under hoodmoulds to ground and upper floor; single 4-pane attic sash with hoodmould and keyed oval above. Rear: various additions of c1750 and late C18 obscuring all except 1 gable to main range having brick-rebuilt gable-mounted chimney. Additions include staircase hall with north and south end gables, 2 round arched stair sashes and doorway with flat porch hood on scrolled brackets and double 3-panel fielded doors; and projecting octagonal-ended wing with large 8-pane C19 sash to each facet and hipped roof. Further gabled block in angle between wing and staircase hall. North side: lengthened to east upon addition of wing having two 8-pane sashes with timber lintels in brick wall. Mixed fenestration, some with mullions to right. Interior: fine open well staircase with 3 barleysugar balusters per tread, scrolled open strings, wreathed handrails above double curtail step, fluted newel posts and matching dado panelling. Coved ceiling with central rose. Large Oak Room in wing built to receive Frederick, Prince of Wales, has carved swags and contemporary fireplace. Oak panelling in dining room came from Kingscote Park. One of 2 spiral staircases in original house survives. The elaborate cl750 additions were for Onesephorus Paul in preparation for Frederick's tour of the local clothing industries. Mid C18 garden wall stands to west (q.v.). (W.J.
