2 houses adjoining. C16, large chimney inserted in cross-passage in mid
C17, brick infilling panels C18. Exposed timber frame on red brick sill.
Sandy red brick infill panels and casing to ground floor of No. 14.
Steep old red tile roof. Clunch and knapped flint chequerwork walling to
ground floor opposite internal chimney in middle probably indicates an
oven inside. No. 16 on E 2-storeys, facing N, was probably an open hall
house later floored, with E end bay of 2-storeys and tension bracing
from beginning. Wider middle bay for hall with straight brace to
wallplates and narrow cross-passage bay now occupied by chimney. No. 14
on W has higher floor level but may have been ancillary service (or
byre) building. It has a wide bay and with heavy tension brace narrower
RH bay with straight brace to wallplate. No. 16 has 2 1st floor windows,
ground floor window on LH and battened door with adjoining small window
all under tiled lean-to hood on RH 3-light flush lattice leaded
casements. Large stack originally of 2 or 3 flues has had another flue
attached in C18 on W side to serve No. 14. Late E gable external stack.
Similar W gable internal stack to No. 14. This house has 1 1/2-storeys with
2 gabled dormers at eaves, 2 flush 3-light lattice leaded casement
windows to ground floor and low battened door with W end of wider LH bay
up 2 steps. E gable of No. 16 has exposed frame of clasped-purlin roof,
collar and struts gable truss and tension brace from jowled corner post.
