KIRBY GRINDALYTHE VILLAGE STREET SE 96 NW (north side, off) 13/24 Church of St Andrew 10.10.66 GV II* Church. 1878, incorporating C12 tower and C14 belfry; spire rebuilt in C18. By G E Street for Sir Tatton Sykes. Dressed sandstone and sandstone ashlar, reusing fragments of carved medieval masonry in chancel; roll-moulded, chamfered plinth. Tiled roof with pierced cresting. West tower; 4-bay nave, north aisle and clerestory; south porch; chancel, north chapel and vestry. 4-stage tower with north-east vice. West doorway of stepped round arch on slim columns with defaced carved capitals and imposts, and steep bases. Slit openings in second and third stages. Belfry string course beneath paired openings with quatrefoil tracery, recessed in pointed arches with hoodmoulds. Plain parapet with restored pinnacles over corbel table with waterspouts. Set-back octagonal spire with cock weather-vane. Conical roof to vice. Gabled porch has pointed arch of 2 orders on columns with crocket capitals beneath chevron-moulded hood. Circular quatrefoil windows in both returns. Interior is tunnel-vaulted. Pointed south door in keel- moulded arch of 2 orders on columns with crocket capitals, inner arch nailhead-moulded. Dogtooth hoodmould. Three 2-light windows to east, with Decorated tracery, separated by offset buttresses. North side has paired lancets in aisle and single lancets in clerestory. Pilaster-buttressed chancel had segment-arched priest's door on south side, rectangular transomed low-side window and 3 lancets further east. Gabled vestry to north has pointed door, lancets and gable-buttressed stack. Circular cinquefoil window in west gable and 3 lancets in east. East end has pilaster angle buttresses, and central gabled dwarf buttress flanked by lancets. Elongated oval light in gable end. A moulded sill band encircles the church. Coped gables, and gable crosses to porch, nave, chancel and vestry. Interior. Stepped round tower arch with imposts, chamfered on lower side. North arcade of pointed arches on clustered column centre pier and responds, and 2 cylindrical piers, all with waterleaf capitals. Pointed chancel arch of 2 orders on responds with elaborate leaf capitals, the inner arch keel- moulded, the outer roll-moulded. Nailhead-moulded hood. Figure carved in high relief over chancel arch. Sedilia between paired columns, the outer ones Norman; aumbry, and reused carved and fluted piscina. Alabaster and marble altarpiece representing The Crucifixion between flanking panels of The Annunciation and lower side panels of the Martyrdoms of SS Andrew and Peter: by James Redfern. Square font with sides carved with interlaced arcades, said to be a copy of original font locked in tower. Pulpit of polished grey granite inlaid with coloured stone. Carved timber rood screen with traceried arch flanked by pointed lights. Original metalwork includes wrought-iron screens to north chapel; lamp-holders in nave and chancel; wrought-iron hinges on all doors; brass eagle lectern. Nave west wall occupied by a mosaic of the Ascension by an unknown Italian artist. Chapel contains C12 arcaded tomb chest said to be that of Walter Espec, founder of the church. Stained glass mostly by Clayton and Bell, with south nave by Burlison and Grylls.
