House. Late C16, rear wing late C17, attics made in early C19 rear wing
altered to kitchen, and added chimneys. Timber frame with exposed
close-studding, lower part of rear wing of plastered brick, half-hipped
steep thatched roof. A large 2-storeys cellar and attics house facing S
with 2 storeys rear wing at NW. Main range has 3-cells, cross-passage
plan with formerly divided service bay at W, large C17 chimney inserted
backing onto the passage with stair originally at its N flank, and
formerly unheated parlour at E with stair in NE corner. Late C17 chimney
built at junction with rear wing for kitchen formed out of service rooms
and new stair in wing. Jettied S front has 3 3-light flush casement
windows to upper floor with a small 2-light window over the door a third
from W end to left of chimney. 3 similar windows to Ground Floor.
Battened entrance door in frame with moulded jambs and recessed head. W
room has mortices for twin 4-centred doorways and axial partition. Beam
embedded in N side of hall chimney suggests an earlier timber framed
chimney. On 1st floor at stairhead a 4-centred doorway with sunk
spandrels. Bar stopped chamfers to joists and beams in hall and chamber,
and to lintol of hall fireplace. Ovolo-moulded window in N side of hall,
and head mortices for a diamond mullioned window with shutter groove in
W wall on 1st floor.Unusual structural feature of thickened principal
posts in jettied S wall to take beams and plate of lower wall. (RCHM
