PITCHFORD C.P.
PITCHFORD
Garden retaining wall and flight of steps adjoining Pitchford Hall to south-east

GV
II

Garden retaining wall and flight of steps. 1870's and 1880's, probably by
George Devey and possibly incorporating parts of an earlier wall.
Coursed red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and stone coping.
Approximately 34 metres long and 1 - 2 metres high with convex curved
projection to east. Flight of 8 stone steps to south with returned
retaining walls and square ashlar piers with globe finials. The wall
may be a rebuilding or a replacement of a wall in a similar position
shown on an estate map of 1714, kept in the house. The retaining wall
forms an important part of the setting of Pitchford Hall (qv) as seen
from the east. Included for group value.
