Description

LLANDINABO CP -
SO 52 NW

3/36 Barn, stables, dovecot
and adjacent outbuildings
about 20 yards east of
Llandinabo Farmhouse

GV II

Barn, stable and dovecot, the last situated in the middle of a cowshelter
range which is now enclosed for storage. Probably late C18 to early C19
with later alterations. Sandstone rubble with pantile, corrugated asbestos
and Welsh slate roofs. L-plan; eight-bay barn aligned roughly east/west
with stable at east end from which to the south returns five-bay former
cowshelter range with a dovecot occupying its middle bay. Barn has early
C20 full-height two-leaved doors to centre of south elevation flanked by
ventilation slits; interior has triple angle strut trusses and the remains
of wall-framing three square panels high on north side. To the right of a
door beneath a tallet at the east end of the barn is the stable which has
two stable doors with a horizontally hung window between and a loft opening,
all with segmental heads; the right hand stable door leads to three loose
boxes by the St Pancras Ironworks, probably late C19, with ball finials
to the columns separating the boxes and cast iron doors with plank infill.
The dovecot has a pyramidical Welsh slate roof and a mid-C20 louvred glover
over a square plan with entry from west side via an iron grill set between
cylindrical piers; the flanking former cowshelter also has cylindrical piers
to the west; the east wall of the cowshelter and dovecot appear to be built
as one. The barn, stable and dovecot range provides a strong visual link
between the Church of St Junabius (qv) and Llandinabo Farmhouse (qv).
Included for group value.
