Whiteley Village

Almshouse group. Circa 1912 by Sir Aston Webb. Red brick with brick parapet in outer
bays to plain tiled roof with gable parapets and end projecting stacks. 2 storeys.
5 bays, outer bays projecting with moulded brick quasi-pilasters on each side of
large tripartite glazing bar sashes. 3 arches on ground floor in centre, with
entrance to centre and casements behind outer pair. Central first floor balcony and
flanking casements. The roof sweeps lower to the rear and is supported on a
gigantic cove.
Whiteley village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
