Church. 1885. By J M Bignall. Yellow brick, red dressings; steeply pitched tiled
roof. Tall town church in Geometrical Gothic style with continuous 6-bay nave and
chancel. Lean-to aisles cliff-like east end. Lancet windows to aisles; plate tracery
to the two pairs of clerestory dormers. Three-light east window with intersecting
tracery. Imposing interior. Some stone dressings. Arcades with clustered piers.
Complex timber roof of king post construction coved to springing. Elaborate furni-
shings including reredos and pulpit with carved figures by Zwincke, wrought iron
altar rail, stained glass by Hardman, etc. The projected tower and spire were never
built.
