1685-1/5/293 Cathedral House
GV II
Presbytery for the Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of St Peter
(qv) 1857-59, and 1895-96. By Edward Paley and extended to the
south by Austin and Paley. Sandstone rubble with ashlar
dressings and slate roofs. Built in front of a small cloister
courtyard against the south side of the Cathedral.
The main range faces west and is of 2 storeys with a central
2-storey canted bay window under a hipped roof. At the left it
is connected to the Cathedral by a single-storey porch. The
windows have chamfered surrounds and mullions and the lights
have heads which are either trefoiled or have a depressed
2-centred arch. Those on the ground floor and to the bay have
transoms. To the left of the bay window are 2 bays with
2-light windows. To the right is a single bay with 3-light
windows. The gables are coped. 2 chimneys on the ridge and one
on the left-hand gable.
The Austin and Paley addition is in a similar style and
projects forwards at the right; it has a chimney and a
2-storey window turret in the angle with the main range. Its
gable, facing west, has a single-storey canted bay window with
2 transoms. On the south side a 2-storey projecting gabled
wing contains the doorway, with a moulded pointed arch and
hoodmould.
