Cross in Roman Catholic Cemetery

GV II

Cross. 1899. Replaced an earlier cross designed by EG Paley in
1851, which was blown down in a gale. Sandstone ashlar. Stands
on 2 steps of octagonal plan. The octagonal base has blind
arcading of trefoiled arches carried on engaged shafts and is
inscribed: 'Apud Dominum misericordia et copiosa apud eum
redemptio.' The tapering octagonal shaft has a moulded base
and a cap carved with a lamb and eagle. It carries a cross
with the crucified Christ on the west face and with Mary
standing on the east face.
