block

GV II

Shown on OS map as Monument.
Mounting block and obelisk. C18/early C19. Limestone and
yellow brick. 3 stone steps to NW and SE rise to a square
platform, partly of stone, partly of render on yellow brick,
on which is a plain square base of stone, on which are 4
square stone blocks supporting a stone obelisk. Below the
platform is a semicircular vault, blocked near each end with
red brick in stretcher bond. On the point of the obelisk is a
black spread eagle on a ball, of cast-iron. The right to use
this device from the arms of Sicily was granted in 1511 by
King Ferdinand of Aragon to Wystan Browne, father of Sir
Antony Browne, founder of Brentwood School.
