House. Early C19 and later, with many additions and alterations. Brick, rendered and colour-washed, hipped slated roofs. Plan comprises a central rectangular block, facing E with 2 linked, deep, pavilion wings at the N and S ends. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys (although central attic space now used, lit from rear). Front, E elevation, principal block, 3 window range, all sashes with glazing bars, much renewed, chimney-stacks on end walls. Ground and first floors separated by 2 moulded string courses with 2 panels between with Adam-esque wheat-ear and roundel motif. Central bay projects and is pedimented, cartouche in tympanum and stack projecting from pediment. Central C20 flat headed porch in Tuscan style. Ground floor 2 windows 4x4 panes, C20 door, oak with decorative iron work, First floor, 3 windows, 4x4 panes. To N, pavilion and linking bay have blind first-floor window recesses, moulded string courses as centre block, continuing with an Adam-esque panel between on the link bay. Ground-floor pavilion has blind round headed recessed arch containing a blind doorway, link bay has a round headed niche. S pavilion and link bay detail now covered by later addition said to be essentially early C20. N end has ground-floor servants' range with panelled door and continuous range of fixed windows each side. Taller block behind with hipped roof and segment headed sash window with glazing bars 3x4 panes. End pavilion with hipped roof and segment headed sash window with glazing bars, 3x4 panes. Rear, W elevation. Principal units of central block linked pavilion with 2 string courses, but with additional units. Ground falls to rear and house is on a podium with semi-basement windows. Central block N end windows enlarged in mid-C19 to 2-storey canted bay with hipped slated roof. All windows except 2 on ground floor of projecting bay (one fixed and oen casement) are simple 2-paned sashes. C20 flat-roofed dormer window of 3 sash lights. Middle register between floors has blind window recesses. S linking bay has a simple canted bay added, similar to that on central block. S pavilion with string courses but no windows. N pavilion has a projecting round stair tower with a conical roof, surmounted by a lantern, also with a conical roof, 2 small round headed casement stair windows. Rear of pavilion and ground-floor link to servants' block has 4 small round headed casement windows. Middle register of pavilion and link to central block, 2 simple sash windows. Ground floor of link, doorway with semicircular fanlight with glazing bars, door, 2 lower sunk panels and upper glazing with glazing bars, 2x2 panes, round fixed window adjacent to doorway. To N servants' block with ground-floor casement window with glazing bars, 6x3 panes, above on first floor, 2-light casement with glazing bars, 6x4 panes. To W unit with Venetian pattern window and C20 swimming pool in C19 style to W (not to be included in the listing). S end elevation, early C19 pavilion, hipped slated roof, stacks to E and W ends, 3 window range, 2 string courses defining a middle register with blind window recesses. All windows C20 simple sashes. Central ground-floor door, raised above ground-level stairs to W and low wall with ornamental balustrade to E. Doorway, roundheaded, glazed fanlight, door with 2 lower panels and single upper glazed pane. To E, gable end of early C20 unit with Venetian style window, 2 sash windows with central round headed fixed window. N end elevation, pavilion, 3-storeyed, 3 window range with moulded string courses with windows between, blind recessed panels above ground-floor windows under lower string course. Ground floor, 2 sash windows with glazing bars, 3x4 panes. First and second floors each 3 sash windows, 3x2 panes. C19 ground-floor servants' block overlaps to W with stack and unit with 2 round headed windows with glazing bars, one 2x3 panes and one 3x4 panes. C20 door between with lower panel and glazing above. Swimming pool to W. INTERIOR much altered and renewed. Spiral stair in stair tower for servants remains, as does extensive cellar beneath podium. Mascalls and its stable block (qv) form a group.
