Formerly known as: The Cottage South Weald Village. House. Early C19. Timber-framed, weatherboarded and rendered, low pitch, hipped, slate roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, stacks rise through end roof pitches. W front elevation, rendering lined out as ashlar. 3 window range, ground floor, 2 sash windows with side lights, glazing bars, 1x4, 3x4, 1x4 panes, below each a deep triple bracketed shelf, between windows a door with simple frame with Greek key, door 6 panels, lower 4 flush with beaded edges, upper 2 glazed. Open wooden verandah across whole front with swept roof, 8 trellised uprights and shallow arcade arches. First floor, 3 similar sash windows with louvred shutters, glazing bars, 3x4 panes. S end elevation, weatherboarded with central stack through roof. Ground floor, an early C20 3-light casement window with transom and glazing bars, 6x5 panes, to E sash window, with moulded architrave, glazing bars, 3x4 panes, similar window above on first floor. To E set back, first floor projection on cornice base iron tubular posts, below and behind, 2-storey projection with C19 door, 4 flush panels with beaded edges. E rear elevation weatherboarded with central 2-storey projection and, to S, first-floor deeper projection on posts. House block N end, ground floor, large sash window, with glazing bars, 4x6 panes, above, on first floor, sash window with moulded architrave, glazing bars, 3x4 panes. Central 2-storey projection, ground floor, 2-light casement, above on first floor, C20 casement with glazing bars, 2x2 panes, in old frame with moulded architrave. First floor projection, sash window. INTERIOR has original chimney-pieces with reeded surrounds and corner roundels. At front, iron spear-head railings with pine cone terminals continuous with those at the Old Post Office (qv). Luptons (qv), Wealdcote and granary (qv), The Cottage, The Post Office (qv) and the Tower Arms (qv) form a group.
