Opened by the Mercantile Bank of Lancashire in c. 1896 as its new head office, the bank sold its business to The Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank on 1st July 1904, which in turn amalgamated on 3 January 1928 with The Bank of Liverpool & Martins Ltd to become Martins Bank Limited. Having a surfeit of premises in this part of the city, Martins closed the bank in 1932, since when it has provided office and other commercial functions, currently (2015) including a branch of the hairdresser, Toni & Guy.
