Includes: Nos.16-21 MARKET HILL. College buildings and shops. 1937. By J Murray
Easton of Stanley Hall, Easton and Robertson. Portland stone (to Market Hill) and Ketton
stone (to Rose Crescent and St Mary's Court) with flat roofs. Modern style with slightly
curving front. 5 storeys; 9-window range in all to main front. 4-light metal casements with
curving casements to far left corner and slit windows to far right. The principal windows are
slightly recessed and on the lower 3 floors the canted jambs have panels of fine carving. On
ground floor behind an open colonnade is a row of shops (nos.16-21 Market Hill). To far
right set back is a similar slightly taller section with 2-light casements which returns into
Rose Crescent, and which then continues in a recessed section to project again for the final
bay. The rear has 6/6 sashes with moulded architraves and a cornice below the attic storey
which has 2-light casements. The architect won the RIBA bronze medal for his design
which Pevsner describes as the best modern building of its date in Cambridge. (Pevsner, N,
