SX77SE Limekilns beside road at SX 78307152
849-1/2/7
II
Pair of limekilns. Probably mid-C19 (after 1840). Stone
rubble. Left-hand kiln has round-arched opening with flue-hole
at back of semi-circular domed interior. Right-hand kiln
(heavily overgrown) similar, but with taller arch, probably
pointed. Flue-hole is almost completely buried. On each side
of interior is a small rectangular recess. Report of 1983 says
'the tops of their circular wells are visible, although the
wells are filled with debris.' Not shown in 1840 tithe
apportionment. The kilns are immediately opposite an unlisted
bungalow called 'Catonia'.
