Clifton.
Terrace of 11 houses. Dated 1863 by deeds. Limestone ashlar,
roof not visible. Double-depth plan. Classical terrace with
Gothic-style fenestration. 3 storeys and triple basement;
2-window range.
Terrace with ramped centre to parapet, each house has 2
full-height raised sections containing the openings, a moulded
coping that breaks forward over these, with the ground floor
banded in between to a string. Left-hand doorways with trefoil
heads, fanlights with round lights, and 4-panel doors with
rounded tops to glazed upper panels.
Semicircular-arched windows have vermiculated spandrel panels
and plain surrounds with shoulders; torus-moulded frames have
3 semicircular lights to the ground floor and 2 to the upper
floors, with circular upper lights set between them.
Plate-glass windows. Nos 9 & 10 have right-hand doorways,
No.11 has a 2-storey porch set in front with side doorway.
Rear elevation has 2-storey canted oriel; lower 2 basement
storeys form separate houses with doorways to the upper floors
linked by a raised path.
INTERIOR: upper houses have an entrance hall divided by a
semicircular arch on corbels, to a lateral open dogleg stair
with turned balusters; 6-panel doors, panelled shutters and
cornices.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached spear-headed cast-iron basement
area railings.
Built on the side of a quarry and unusually using the fall in
ground to increase accommodation.
