Pair of attached houses. c1830. Possibly by Charles Dyer. Limestone ashlar with party wall and lateral stacks, and a slate hipped roof, not visible to the central section. Double-depth plan. Neoclassical style. Each of 3 storeys and basement; 5-window range. A symmetrical pair with 4-window central section stepped forward, and one and 2-storey wings; first-floor sill band to the centre, cornices and parapets. Doorways to inner side of wings have architraves, rectangular overlights with diagonal and oval metal glazing bars, and 6-panel doors. Single inner ground-floor tripartite windows set in segmental-arched recesses, with pilaster jambs, plain windows above and to the wings, with 6/6-pane sashes. Full-width Greek Revival-style cast-iron verandah has stanchions with palmette capitals, and acroteria above. Rear elevation has inner ground-floor 3-light bows, No.2 has an outer first-floor oriel. INTERIOR: No.3, entrance hall divided by a semicircular arch from a rear open-well stair with stick balusters, curtail and wreathed rail; principal ground-floor rooms, to the left with distyle-in-antis fluted scagliola Ionic columns; 6-panel mahogany doors, curved rising shutters to the rear bows, and Greek Revival-style plaster mouldings. No.2 subdivided into flats. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front garden walls, ashlar Pennant piers and cast-iron gate brackets. Part of a group of fine villas extending W from Litfield Place; Camp House (qv) also signed by Dyer.
