Three houses, 2 attached, now offices. c1850. Limestone ashlar
with party wall stacks and a concrete tile hipped roof.
Double-depth plan, No.5 separated from the attached pair. Each
of 3 storeys; 3-window range.
Each has clasping pilasters with raised decoration, sill and
plat bands, and windows with semicircular-arched heads. A
banded ground-floor with a bay with tall tripartite windows,
alternate square and concave rusticated jambs, and a cornice
above which curves in at the corners over deep paired
brackets.
The left-hand return has 3 blocked windows and the cornice,
which continues to a single-storey entrance block set back
with a semicircular-arched doorway, fanlight and 6-panel door.
First floor has 3 windows with concave surrounds, and oval
sunken panels each side. 2 attic windows have raised
decorative aprons and semicircular pediments which break the
eaves, and very tall brackets either side, paired to the
corners. 2/2-pane sashes. INTERIOR not inspected.
An exuberant design which exemplifies the later C19 fashion
for the application of ornament with less and less of a
historical basis. Nos 5-19 (qv) are now linked into a single
office.
