Description

CREWKERNE

ST4309 ABBEY STREET
876-1/6/11 (North side)
Wall, railings, gates and gatepiers
to the front of No.26

GV II

Wall, railings, gate and gate piers. 1828 and late C19. Low
Ham Hill stone wall, attached to SW corner of No.28 (qv),
curves backward and encloses garden to No.26. To the far right
is a late C19 cast-iron gate between cast-iron supports,
probably a former tradesmen's entrance, [now the rear entrance
to St Martin's School (qv)] ; to the left of it are similar
double gates and two gate piers with pyramidal caps, that to
the left has been rebuilt. Complex Regency-style railings span
the remaining front; these have a horizontal band of pierced
rope-pattern near the base with paired scrolls above, festoons
looped to alternate railings, and 3-pronged finials. Opposite
the front door is a cast-iron gate on cast-iron supports
similar to that on the right.
