01/11/72 gardens

GV II

Ornamental iron gate, gate piers and steps at approach to
maze. Inscription 1840 on W pier. Piers of red brick with
stone cornices and ball finials plus a central pilaster with
top terminating in an inverted stone console. Gateway
approached by stone steps, now without stone carved griffins
(previously recorded). Gates supported by inner wrought-iron
decorative piers linked by swept railings to outer brick
piers. Iron piers and gateway cresting in `Jacobean' strapwork
style, gate leaves have freer scroll and foliage decoration.
