- side of Church of St. Chad

Sundial, dated 1767. Stone. Very simple tapered column with swelling base,
on a short cylindrical pedestal with splayed square foot (all one piece);
annular cap with brass plate and scrolled gnomon. Plate, inscribed
"J. Horrocks 1767" has 16 inscribed lines of bearing to named places,
inter alia "Constantinople", "Rome", "Lisbon", "Goa", "Mexico", "Quebeck",
in puzzling relation to one another, and of an orientation which suggests
that it is grossly ex situ. (Inscribed latitude 53°4O': Whittle-le-Woods
is at 53°35').
