House. Late medieval, C17, C19 and C20. Timber-framed,
rendered and colour-washed, roof peg-tiled. Principal block
rectangular plan with C20 rear wing at NW end and C20 porch on
SE end.
EXTERIOR: SW front elevation. Principal one and a half
storeyed range with Mansard roof, 2 storeyed cross-wing at SE
end with hipped roof. Principal range, stack central, in C20
brick, projecting through roof to front of apex. 3 window
range with gabled dormers directly above ground-floor windows.
All C20 2-light casements with single horizontal glazing bar,
each window of 2x2 panes. C20 gabled porch rendered as house
with single side lights and boarded door with upper
rectangular light. Cross-wing facade with horizontal break,
probably site of jetty, now gone. One upper and 2 lower
windows, each C20 2-light casements as rest of elevation.
Subsidiary stack projecting with wide base on SE end,
rendered. Upper exposed brickwork C20. Rear NE elevation
rendered as front, central range with cross-wing to SE end and
C20 wing at NW end. Central range, ground floor 3-light
casement window, simple gabled dormer with 2-light casement,
2x2 panes. Lean-to porch in brick with C20 boarded door. SE
cross-wing has mid height wall break suggesting jetty as at
front. Ground floor C20 single light casement, first floor one
single light and one 2-light C20 casement windows. C20 porch
on SE end flush to back with stable type boarded door with
upper light in back wall. C20 wing at NW end. Ground floor
brick, first floor rendered, half hipped roof. Ground floor,
one 2-light casement window and one boarded stable door with
upper light and one French window, each leaf 4 panes. SE end
elevation, hipped roof, external stack with broad base and C20
porch with simple gable, peg-tiled and 2-light casement
window. NW end elevation, Mansard gabled end of old range and
C20 wing to NE Gable end has one ground-floor and one
first-floor C20 2-light casement window. C20 wing, ground
floor brick upper wall rendered, peg-tiled roof. Ground floor,
one 2-light casement and one boarded door with upper light. 2
dormer windows, simple gables with 2-light casement windows.
INTERIOR considerably rebuilt with front and back walls
replaced in brick. One studded cross-wall remains from
medieval times between central range and cross-wing. Original
doorway through evident to rear of block implying cross wall
is high end of hall. Hall probably had a central crown post,
avoided when principal stack built off apex, to front of hall.
Cross-wing probably jettied at front and back but joists now
present probably replaced c1600 when inserted floor set in
hall - both have slender joists and lamb's tongue stopped
chamfers on principal bridging joists. Primary braced
timber-framing evident in hall upper bay end wall plus the
C18/C19 style Mansard roof denotes considerable rebuilding
before C20 general refurbishment and additions. Date of SE
stack obscure, internally covered and externally rendered and
rebuilt. It is probably early C17, when the floors were
inserted.
