10/11/78 Nos.3-19 (Consecutive)
(Formerly Listed as:
RIDLEY TERRACE
(South side)
Nos.1-19 (Consecutive))

II

Terrace of Sunderland cottages. c1880. Brick with stone plinth
and brick dressings; roofs Welsh slate except where renewed,
Nos 11 and 16 with concrete tiles and some felt-covered; brick
chimneys. Each house one storey, one window. Internal steps up
to doors, all renewed, grouped in pairs, with semicircular
overlights; rubbed brick arches to surrounds have pointed
heads in North Italian Gothic shape; similar arches over
renewed windows with projecting stone sills. Moulded brick
eaves cornice with brick gutter brackets except where removed
from Nos 3, 4 and 19, which may have been extensively rebuilt.
Low pitched roofs have square corniced chimney-stacks between
each pair of houses. No.13 has canted dormer of late C19
Sunderland type with gabled roof. Alterations include
pebble-dashed render to Nos 5, 7, 9, 14, 15 and 18; painted
brickwork to Nos 6, 12 and 13. Retained as an example of an
interesting type of local C19 workers' housing which is
centred on the Sunderland area and has resulted in a strong
one-storey tradition, as opposed to the 2-storey Tyneside
flats in the Tyneside area.
