GV II
Forecourt and rear courtyard walls, steps and mounting block.
C18 and mid C19. Rubble with granite dressings including C18
steps with moulded edge and similar top step of mounting
block; square edged copings to front wall and wall at
right-angles to rear of rear courtyard, water trough at rear
of rear courtyard and scantle slate coping to tall wall on
left of forecourt. Rectangular forecourt; irregular rear
cobbled courtyard with round central pond. Central gateway to
forecourt approached by 4 semicircular-on-plan steps and 1
straight step; 5-step mounting block on the right. Tall
right-hand wall of rear courtyard has many nesting boxes. The
water trough was originally filled by the complex labyrinth of
underground channels at Methleigh which are connected to the
mill leat. There is another watering place in the retaining
wall in front of the wing of the house. The water supply
system at Methleigh, serving mill, farm buildings, house and
gardens is a considerable feat of planning and engineering and
is probably the most complex of its kind in Cornwall.
