Bridge over the River Wid (that part in Brentwood District)

small bridge. c1600, C19 and C20. Red Brick_ Approx 13m long. .
Two 2-centre arches of elegant arcature, tr1angular cutwaters continuing up and reduced with chamfered bricks as central triangular buttress. Carriage level expressed on outer faces by offset of sloping profile constructed of 3 courses with chamfered bricks. Carriageway ends swept out at a sharp angle and walls have a slight inner batter. Lower b~ickwork c1600, arches, voussoirs and lower walling in English bond. Upper part with several rebuilding phaees, 2 meeting in centre on E side, English bond retained in later work, W side upper part completely rebuilt in red brick in C20. The bridge appears to be one constructed by Lord Petre (proximity to Ingatestone Hall (qv) and high quality of brickwork). The bridge sits astride the boundary between the Districts of Brentwood and Chelmsford.
