Douce's Manor

A Grade II* Listed Building in West Malling, Kent

Local Blue Plaque to Douce's Manor

Uploader's Comments

Taken 23/1/22 . The Manor served at the Officer Mess to RAF West Malling during WW2. Peter Townsend, Fighter Pilot and Princess Margaret's first boyfriend. As he was a divorcee they could not marry. John Cunningham was a Night Figter Pilot, the first to shoot down an enemy raider using RADAR. As this was secret at the time, this was explained that he had good eyesight, hence Cat's eyes. Also he ate lots of Carrots. Guy Gibson doesn't get a mention although he did a tour on Night Fighters at RAF West Malling before returning to Bomber Command and subsequent fame for leading the Dambusters. The Ex RAF Station, now a large housing development called Kings Hill at least acknowledges him, as the main road in is Gibson Drive.
