Walls, piers and bridge. Early C19. Brick walls with stone dressings, volcanic
stone at tunnel entry and part of tunnel. Walls about 50 metres long, splayed at
each end, about 2 metres high to north and one metre high to south, with stone
plinth and coping, brick piers at about 8 metre intervals; at western end a pair
of stonesquare piers with rectangular recesses to sides and hipped tops; at
western and eastern approaches to bridge, pairs of similar piers; on top of bridge
a pair of stone piers with cornice and hipped top. Northern tunnel entry in
volcanic stone has wide arch with large keystone, 5 inner arches to vault each
with pendant keystone, each springing from pilaster, continuous cornice, first bay
of tunnel vault faced in variegated coloured volcanic stones, yellow, black and
grey, other bays faced in brick. South tunnel entry has some volcanic stone
missing, revealing brick core, similar arch and inner curtain wall set back with
smaller segmental-headed entry and heavy keystone, small triangular opening to
each side. Part of ornamental walk around Dodington Park (q.v.), with appearance
of grotto, in poor condition at time of survey (September 1984).
