House. Late C17. 2 storeys, 3 windows, timberframed and
plastered, facing W. Steep old red tiled gabled roof continued
as catslide over contemporary rear outshot. Large C18 hipped
tiled dormer on rear slope on S side. External red brick gable
chimneys, larger on S, in English bond with plinth offset.
Symmetrical double-fronted house with central stair and passage.
Parlour in N room. Dairy on N and kitchen on S in shallower rear
part. Modern glazed extension to kitchen. 3-light C19 wooden
casements to upper floor, 2-light over central door. Modern
windows on Ground floor and small gabled porch to plank door. On
N wall dairy has an original 5-light unglazed mullioned wooden
window, with metal gauze outside and hinged shutter inside.
Chamfered axial beams to Ground floor. Clasped purlin roof with
high-set purlins. Parlour has moulded and panelled dado rail and
fine late C17 corner cupboard with ovolo-moulded 2-panel door
with H hinges and varied panels with applied blocks to give an
eared or a cross-shaped outline. Plank doors. A house is shown
on this site in Clintons Estate map of 1588 (HRO). This house is
said to have been called 'Stane Farm' after Stane Street
immediately to N. A well with modern curb on S side of house.
