Mid C18, formerly part of the Bear Inn, the principal hostelry in
Speenhamland until it closed shortly before 1768. Remodelled early-mid C19. Originally a 3 storey, 2 window block. Extended by 2 bays at east end over carriageway and reroofed. Hipped slate roof with projecting eaves; at rear,
5 hipped tiled gables. Red brick with dentil eaves cornice and plain band
at 2nd floor level. C19 rusticated stucco ground floor with plain band at
1st floor level. Gauged flat red brick arches to flush framed sash windows
with exposed boxing. Windows in 2nd bay far east blocked. C19 doorway with pilasters and console bracketted cornice; rectangular fanlight and
½ glazed door. Segmental arched carriage entrance at east end. At rear C18
block with large staircase sash window with glazing bars. Late C18 service
range and stables; 2 storeys; brick with tile roof; mostly C19 fenestration
and doorway.
