Country house. Built 1726-9 for the Rev William Stanley DD
probably by John James of Greenwich or a colleague. Red brick
with stone dressings, heavy wood, modillioned, eaves cornice
round the whole building, hipped red tile roof. W entrance front
is two and a half storeys and 5 windows. Double hung sashes with
thick glazing bars, rubbed brick lintels, projecting stone
keystones. Centre bay projects slightly and has raised
pedimented attic with segmental headed sash window, which matches
flanking dormers. The Ground and 1st floors are a modification
of the Venetian window: rounded headed door, fan with radiating
bars and narrow side lights in stone surround; arched 1st floor
sash and side lights. 1 window, 2 storey C19 extension on S has
thin glazing bars to Ground floor and re-used upper sash. E
elevation to large terraced garden is same as front, but centre
projection with no narrow side lights and Ground floor entrance
in channelled stone surround. A curved single storey wall joins
with C19 extension on N, which has a re-used 1st floor sash.
Fine contemporary work inside includes panelled hall with 4
richly carved pedimented doors, large fireplace and full
entablature. Grand staircase has alternating fluted and
barleytwist balusters. Good panelled room on N side;
contemporary servants' staircase on S. SE corner has c.1790,
Adam style interior, fireplace with consoles and figured panel,
niche in S wall. (Pevsner (1977) 256).
