House. 1927, by Oliver Hill for Sidney Smith. Coursed stone rubble; gabled stone
slate roof; stone end stacks, Central-staircase plan with canted side-wings.
Arts and Crafts style. 2 storeys; 7-window range, Central porch, of 2 storeys
and attic, has chamfered 4-centred arched architrave to plank door with strap
hinges, flat stone arch over 2-light casement and lunette to attic, Flat stone
arches, slightly cambered, over 2-light casements. One-storey side wings,
attached to 10 metre long wall with ball finial, to right, and 7 metre long wall
finished with prramidal-roofed gazebo, to left. Similar rear elevation, with
central carved panel by Eric Gill. Interior: stop-chamfered beams and open
fireplaces with stop-chamfered brassumers; heavy plank doors with strap hinges;
fine dog-leg stairs have heavy turned balusters and newel-post finials.
