Description

HOLCOMBE BURNELL HOLCOMBE BURNELL
SX 89 SE

4/77 2 walls and a cross shaft about 9m
south of the Church of St John the
Baptist

GV II

Wall said to mark boundary of medieval churchyard and cross shaft. Probably late
medieval. Granite.
2 sections of low wall to the south of the church with a granite standing cross shaft
on the west section.
Low coped granite walling, octagonal tapering cross shaft with broach stops at the
base.
Possibly the boundary wall of the medieval churchyard. Spreat's engraving of 1842
shows a taller structure and it would appear that the churchyard, on the church side,
has been raised since 1842.
Spreat, W., Picturesque sketches of the Churches of Devon (1842).
